Dolphin or porpoise?
what is the difference?
both are small members of the whale family. There are only a few species of porpoise in the world, all in the family Phocoenidae. There are a lot of dolphins in several different families (the popularly known ones are marine species in the family Delphinidae). The basic external differences are in the shape of the teeth and the appearance of the snout (porpoises don't have a 'beak' while most -- but not all -- dolphins do). In America all dolphins tend to be called porpoises, which is where the confusion comes in. The reason behind it is because there is a species of fish called the dolphinfish, or dolphin for short, which is popular as a sporting target with fishermen.
